At 5th level, a living grimoire can efficiently alternate between attacks with his holy book and casting spells. Whenever he hits an enemy with his holy book, the caster level and DC of his next spell are increased by 1. At 10th and 16th levels, this bonus increases by 1. Whenever the living grimoire casts a spell, his holy book gains the bane weapon special ability for 2 rounds. At 10th level, whenever he casts a spell, his holy book's critical multiplier also becomes ×3 for 2 rounds. At 16th level, whenever he casts a spell, each successful hit with his holy book within the next 2 rounds also applies the effects of the crushing despair spell to the target for 1 minute.
