At 1st level, a Sable Company marine gains a hippogriff as a mount instead of choosing the hunter's bond class feature at 4th level. This ability functions like the druid's animal companion ability, and the marine's effective druid level is equal to his ranger level. While the Sable Company marine is mounted, he also attacks the target of the hippogriff's flying attack, as a full-round action. Ranged attacks made in this way do not provoke attacks of opportunity. The target is considered flat-footed against the marine's first attack made as part of the flying attack.
