The cooking system in 26 recipes

Camp cooking is WotR's smallest subsystem: 26 recipes, one die roll each, and a buff that lasts exactly 24 hours — no exceptions, every single recipe uses the same duration. Here's what the file says.

The difficulty ladder

Cooking checks run from DC 10 (the Hearty Meal anyone can make) to DC 40 (Mind-cleansing Tea, the endgame brew). Between them sits the whole spread — late recipes are genuinely hard checks even for built cooks.

Every recipe is a two-buff package

Each recipe grants exactly two effects when cooked successfully:

  • 1 party buff — the table-wide bonus
  • 1 unit buff — a personal bonus on top

52 buff applications total across the 26 recipes. The party/unit split is why a good cook changes both your accuracy and someone's personal stats at once.

The universal catalyst

25 of the 26 recipes call for Purifying Solution. Whatever apothecary supplies that caravan, the kitchen runs on it. After that the shopping list turns mundane — Flour (6 recipes), Milk (4), Butter (4), Onions (4) — with campaign-flavored exotics like Mutated Fish (5) and Skullberry (4).

What this means for players

  • The uniform 24-hour duration means meal buffs are a daily decision, not a per-camp one — the clock, not your bedroll, sets the cadence.
  • Because DCs top out at 40 and start at 10, the ladder spans from trivially safe to genuinely demanding; late recipes are real checks.
  • Recipe buffs ride the same buff layer as spell effects — 52 of that layer's applications come from the kitchen.
